The Participants

GYAN strives for diversity in the background, country, religion, politics, and culture of the tour participants. Beyond exchanging knowledge with the groups they visit, the participants learn from each other. Tour groups, ranging in size from five to twenty-five may include youth leaders, volunteers, business leaders, academics, activists, public servants, philanthropists, and social entrepreneurs.

Each tour will be approximately half international participants and half English-speaking Brazilians.

To promote participant diversity, some scholarships are available. A portion of tour fees goes towards these scholarships.

The Projects

Youth groups are selected that have shown strong youth leadership, organizational success, and positive visions for the future. To ensure quality and security, we will only visit organizations that are trusted members of GYAN and/or grantees of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

GYAN’s objective is that the tours be as beneficial for the hosting organizations as for tour participants. The tours provide local activists with international visibility and the opportunity to meet and learn from other concerned individuals from around the world.

In order to avoid creating expectations about funding, all site visits are organized within the context of GYAN and cultural exchange. If tour participants wish to deepen relationships with organizations they will be able to do so on an informal and individual basis.

Cost

International Participants: $950 USD
Local Brazilian Participants: R$950 Reals

GYAN trip leaders provide translation, facilitate dialogue, and supply background and supplementary materials to put the work of the organizations in historical and global context.

Seminar fees cover accommodation in recommended hostels, transport by charter bus, and a few group meals. Participants should expect additional expenses for meals and personal purchases. Limited scholarships are available for people who can not afford to participate.

Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from the starting city. GYAN can help make arrangements for travel back to the starting city.

A portion of the fee goes towards sustaining the activities of GYAN and its partner organizations. Fees also help make scholarships for non-paying participants possible.
