This trip takes us to the Northeast, described by many Brazilians as the "heart" of the nation. The afrobrazilian culture is strongest in this region, birthplace of capoeira (a mix of dance and martial arts now popular around the world) and a variety of syncretic religions combining African traditions with Catholicism.

While culturally rich, the region is economically poor, with persistently high rates of unemployment. The state of Bahia repeatedly falls into the lowest categories of the social development indices for poverty, literacy, and education. The state of Pernambuco, with its recurring droughts and amazingly resilient population, holds particular importance in Brazilian culture as a symbol of suffering and endurance. The region’s history of slavery and resistance, of poverty and survival, create a fascinating backdrop for the youth movements of today.

In the Northeast, seminar participants will meet with youth using the rich cultural traditions of the region to fight social exclusion, to educate their communities and to give voice to their peers. We will visit income generation projects helping youth to overcome the region’s infamously low formal employment opportunities, and see how youth are leading the way in the region’s quest for social development.

Through it all, participants will experience the amazing spirit of the Northeast - its music, dance, and the famous friendliness of its people.
