:: Introduction

Dear Friends,

Last weekend, young people in over 117 countries came out to celebrate the 7th Annual Global Youth Service Day. Despite the wars and civil unrest, young people volunteered to help their communities all across the globe, from the "Green Zone" in Baghdad to Ramallah in Palestine, from Iran to Sudan and Brazil. It is extraordinary to see what an amazing force young people are on such occasions, when their collective power is so clearly illustrated. Their contributions are to be celebrated, not only then, but always.

While facing the pandemic of school shootings in schools in the late 90's, President Clinton convened some young people to talk about ways to curb youth violence. Lucky to be among the participants, I asked only that his administration celebrate the incredible and positive contributions young people are making every day, instead of turning these hopeless young people into mini-celebrities because of their rare and desperate acts.

Young people naturally want to serve, and volunteerism represents an important entry into civic participation. Our own work is also based on service, and we have grown because of incredibly committed volunteers.

It has been a distinct honor to work with Youth Service America on building Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) into the world's largest celebration of young volunteers. Now in its 7th year, it has only ways in which to grow, as do the ways in which we celebrate the efforts of young people working to improve our world. (see GYSD press release).

I wish to thank all the GYSD participants, coordinators, supporters and friends, as well as the entire movement of volunteers across the globe who give their time to help others. It is perhaps the most blessed thing we can do.

In Peace,

Benjamin Quinto
Executive Director
