October 2005

Dear friends,

In early October, the historic 10-year review of the United Nations World Programme of Action for Youth took place at UN Headquarters in New York. The landmark process involved young people from all around the world. A record 58 youth were included on official member state delegations to the United Nations General Assembly -- the higest number ever -- and resulted in 22 official statements made by youth. Learn more about the review, resolutions, participants and more here.

The realization that greater coordination support was needed for these youth delegates prompted discussions between youth NGOs, official delegates and the United Nations Programme on Youth. The Global Youth Action Network has offered to continue its ad-hoc support of youth coming on delegations from year to year.

We are also very excited to announce the launch of the 7th Annual Global Youth Service Day, a program of Youth Service America in collaboration with the Global Youth Action Network. Each year, these celebrations mobilize more than 1,000,000 young volunteers in over 100 countries and we are currently looking for National and local Lead Agencies to organize volunteer events. GYSD celebrations will be held 21-23 April, 2006.

Finally, this year has brought unimagined catastrophes and devastating natural disasters the world over. Whether or not the global community chooses to recognize the connection between our actions and their impact on the environment, or if governments will ever be sufficiently prepared to respond in times of crises is not as important as whether or not we, as civil society and human beings, are able to mobilize with swift action to support those in critical need. I encourage you to do what you can for the people of South Asia who have lived through the latest of these nightmares. More information is below.

In Peace,
Benjamin Quinto
Executive Director

P.S. Happy 60th Anniversary, United Nations!
